Pilates with Michelle Potts – By Lucy Clarkson

11th January 2021

It is no secret that everyone is stressed (and that means, extremely stressed) at the moment. We are in, yet another, national lockdown. Oh the joys. Gyms are now shut, much to our dismay over here at Bloomsbury. As most people will know, exercise isn’t just about keeping fit, a lot of people use exercise as a means to keep on top of their mental health. During these difficult times, helping each other keep on top of their mental health is imperative. To this end, we thought we would interview trained Pilates instructor Michelle Potts about she is continuing to run her at home Pilates business during lockdown.

Can you explain to us what it is you do?

I am a qualified Pilates Instructor and teach Pilates exercises to private clients, small groups and also via Zoom to larger groups. At the moment, all classes are via Zoom.

What are the short- and long-term benefits of Pilates?

Pilates is known as functional fitness – that means it is an exercise programme that supports movements in your everyday life.  Pilates promotes: correct alignment, to enable your body to work at its best improves flexibility, mobility, strengthens the body, improves co-ordination and is a brilliant de-stresser. Within 10 sessions (short term) of Pilates, you will feel the benefits as above.  (Session one, will definitely start to destress you).  You will move more easily, in some cases you can be pain free if you have an injury.  Long term, it will give you the best of your body and help you live your life how you want to live it (with the advantage of being able to put your socks on yourself in old age!).

How has Pilates changed your life?

After many years of gymnastics, I suffered from severe back issues. Major spinal surgery followed and during recovery, the only exercise which improved my wellbeing was Pilates. This led me to train as an instructor, so I could share the benefits with others. From not being able to walk very far, I now teach a minimum of 8 classes per week (with many of my clients being in their 20s – so I have to keep ahead of them!).

Are there mental health benefits?

Only positive ones – you never regret a Pilates class! For 45-60 minutes, you are concentrating on yourself – your body and how it is reacting to the various exercises. It is a total de-stresser! You feel more confident, stand taller and move with so much more fluidity – all adding to positive mental health.

What are the physical health benefits?

If your body is in its correct alignment, the muscles work how they should – this avoids injury or if you are injured, will aid recovery.

Is there more than one type of Pilates?

Joseph Pilates created the original set of exercises; his aim was to rehabilitate injured dancers and athletes. Some of his original exercises are quite difficult for the general population to replicate. However, the fundamentals around his exercises remain and form the basis for all forms of Pilates – Concentration, Centring, Control, Precision, Breathe and Flow.

What muscles does Pilates work?

All muscles are used but predominately we are focusing on the core muscles (those deep within the body). The more global muscles (such as abs), are worked as a consequence. The core muscles often get neglected, whilst people focus on getting say, a six pack but the core muscles are so important to our stability/balance – Pilates engages you with your core muscles and strengthens them.

Being unable to attend gym classes at the moment, what are your top tips for setting up a space for Pilates in your home?

You really don’t need much space at all. I have a client who is living in her towing caravan at the moment and she manages two classes a week. You need enough space for a mat, and a mat to put in that space! We also like to use a small Pilates ball to challenge our balance and sometimes small hand weights (or cans of beans!). So, very little space at all.

Host Interview – By Lucy Clarkson

4th January 2021

We decided to interview the host of our boujiee Soho Loft apartment. A favourite for Hollywood A-listers, this swanky apartment has featured in Ok, Hello, Daily Mail, Now, BBC, Sky, and a myriad of shoots for world-famous fashion brands. This converted warehouse is chic and modish with its bright colours contrasted with the brick wall feature and wacky artwork. In other words, it is the perfect combination of contemporary, Warholian, and Vorticist décor, and every piece of furniture has been hand-picked from London’s most exclusive auction houses.

Favourite interior designer / architect?

My favourite interior designer is House of Hackney. House of Hackney are a British luxury interior and lifestyle brand, and actually designed Kate Moss’s house in Hampstead Heath. The company specialises in British made goods, founded by husband and wife duo Javvy M Royle and Frieda Gormley. Take a look at their website below.

https://www.houseofhackney.com/uk/

Favourite visual style / aesthetic?

“Minimal, contemporary, antique.” One of the most interesting things about this property’s design is the contrasting themes. The bright pinks, lighted signs and bright clashing colours are beautifully juxtaposed with the antique pieces dotted around the space. There are super modern and urban aspects put next to archaic antique objects to create the personality that this apartment exudes.

What is your ideal holiday?

“Thailand for 6 weeks.”

Favourite London hotel?

“Sanderson.” Fancy a weekend in the city? Book the Sanderson to understand the hype…it’s glorious.

What was your aim with the Soho Loft?

“To create an eclectic, fun, luxury space with a cozy feng shui feel.” What is feng shui I hear you ask? It’s a term thrown around a LOT, and we ALL pretend to know what it means…let’s get the definition. ‘Feng shui, also known as Chinese geomancy, is a pseudoscientific traditional practice originating from ancient China, which claims to use energy forces to harmonise individuals with their surrounding environment”. Now, you may not be able to tell from the photos, but I have been in this apartment, and trust me, its feng shui.

Weird fact about yourself?

“My eyes blow up like Marty Feldman if I get anywhere near horses.” I did not know who Marty Feldman was until this interview. I googled. I was scared. Google it. You’ll be scared.

Written by James Cornwell – CEO

31st December 2020

It is without a doubt that 2020 has been the hardest year for us. We are Prop-Tech and Holiday Rental company, servicing predominantly international travellers from around the Globe.

“Suspension of International flights from 19th March 2020, Suspension of Domestic flights from 25th March 2020 followed by the official lockdown on the 26th of March 2020

(Cancellation % between January and December 2020).

In just over 30 days our business had gone from rapid growth plans to dropping quicker than BA’s share price. We had to think fast and are proud to have found a rapid solution through what we call “Midterm corporate lets”, providing a continued and somewhat secure income for our hosts. We had to pivot quicker than a new strain of Covid!

In the wise words of Winston Churchill “Never let a good crisis go to waste”.

We are excited and proud to share continued growth through 2020 with some very exciting plans for 2021.

Bloomsbury Estates: A year in numbers

3 New Hires

We are delighted to welcome 3 new very experienced and talented superstars to the team!

Lesley Chan joins us from an undisclosed company sell out it in Singapore, and brings with her an incredible work ethic, attention to detail and in her short time here has completely restructured our accounting team. She has introduced a whole new accountancy software and uncovered cost savings.

Jake Orr joins us from Plum Guide and brings a wealth of knowledge, contacts, experience. He adds a calm, collected (dare I say almost hipster) vibe to what was once a formal office. In his short time here he has helped double the size of the managed properties, and continues to be an invaluable asset to our growth plans.

Lucy Clarkson joins us as a Literature graduate and has already had a great impact with our marketing plan and as a content editor. We look forward to seeing more of her in 2021.

 16 New Properties

Yes, that’s right, 16 new luxury properties have been invited to our managed portfolio in both London and Bath. These are tough times so the fulfilment of earning a client’s trust and managing their asset for the better is what makes what we do so gratifying.

1 New Development under construction

We have a stunning new development being launched in February 2021, what can only be described as a 6-bedroom, architectural marvel with 3 acres of land overlooking Bath!  Watch this space.

2 New Promotions

Our CEO wrote a whole post about this so I will keep it short; first and foremost, Thomas Dolman joined as a graduate with no experience in the world of property and short lets, this didn’t stop him. He has been the bedrock of the operations department and has integrated some cutting-edge tech in our offering. 2021 is going to be a good year Tom!

Our Director of Sales & Marketing changed title to CEO, he never liked big titles but with the predicted growth it is important to have a head!

1 New City

Bath is one of the most quintessentially British cities in the UK, surrounded by the picturesque Cotswold villages and serene landscapes. We say, if it is okay for prime ministers, George Clooney, Kate Winslet and good old Jeremy Clarkson, it’s okay for us. We have a plethora of international tourist and professional travellers that when staying in our London properties, often wish to escape for a few days. The expansion into bath will compliment our offering of luxury high properties in prime locations.

5 New Prop-Tech Services

Invested into the latest prop-tech services giving us the edge over competitors: new PMS system, new channel manager, new dynamic algorithmic pricing platform, new AI Automations, new, host, web, based performance dashboard.

4 Kickstarter Applications

Applied for 4 news hires through the Governments Kickstarter Scheme.
